January 29, 2008

By day two at the worksite, the kids weren't shy at all!! We had a great time sitting and TRYING to talk with them.
I loved the dimples on this little boy on the left!! All the children were beautiful. . .but his smile was so contagious!!

This is Arnold. By the end of the week he was playing with me and I even got a hug before I left!

The roof going on. I was literally sick-at-my-stomach while they were on the roof. Normally it makes me a little nervous, but this time, if they fell it was about twice as far as normal. . . and there are no safetly harnesses or nets! SCARY stuff!!

In just five days, this pile of blocks will be a church building for the people of the village. This is our missionary, Bro. Larry Walker, and Carmen, a girl from the village. She was very persistent and hung on to several people throughout the day. Normally, the kids stand back for the first day or two and just watch.
This is the view from the middle of the area where the church will be built.
The church is on the fourth 'floor' of the mountain. You can see the tops of the houses on the third row in the bottom of the pic.
The structure is going up.

These are banana trees. They place these plastic sacks over the bundles of bananas to keep the fruit flies and other pests from damaging the fruit.
We went to church this morning at the church we built last year. It was AWESOME to get to see the people we met last year and to see the work they'd done to the church.
This is Pastor Daniel and his family. His oldest daughter, Daniela, is a favorite with our group. She has a place in each of our hearts! She is such a special girl. Last year, I'd given her one of my little change purses before I left. I'd forgotten that there was a little silver heart with my name on it still in there. I only remembered because when I first hugged Daniela this year, she made sure to point out that she'd gotten a silver chain for it and she wears it as a necklace. Her father told us that she thinks about us all the time!

Well, we left an hour earlier than we'd originally planned. At 3:30AM, we left the church headed for the airport. A drive that should normally take around an hour took almost TWO hours! The van wouldn't shift properly and never got out of third gear! We drove 40-45 all the way!! So while we didn't need to leave early for the weather, because the roads were fine, it's a good thing we left early or we may have been late for our flight because of the van!!
The view of the sunrise from the window of the plane. Headed to Honduras!!
Once we got settled in our hotel, we went to the little 24-hour mini-mart located there. I thougtht these cereal boxes were cool.

Getting nervous about our flight tomorrow! We are supposed to take off around 6 am from Little Rock! Hope we are able to make it to the airport and that our flight leaves as scheduled!!

This is what happened when I tried to heat a piece of already cooked frozen chicken. I heard a big 'POP' after about a minute of cooking and this is what I saw when I opened the microwave door!

All of my Gma Polly's great-grandkids!
We had a Christmas Eve Part Two this year since Daniel and family weren't able to come home until now. Worked out well, though. We got to give Gma this pic for Christmas! The only other one we tried to do was when the girls were still babies and NO ONE was smiling in the pic but Gma Polly!! This one is MUCH better! :)

Yeah, I know! So much for not going more than 2 weeks without posting! Good thing I didn't make it a RESOLUTION... then I'd really feel like a loser! :) LOL I was taking my pics and getting them ready... just didn't get them loaded before the missions trip... and then it took me a while to get all those together! Hopefully, I'll be caught up by tomorrow though!

January 1, 2008

Well, I think this is officially the first project I've ever started that I've completed! Yeah, me!

Several people have asked if I'm going to keep going on my Pic-A-Day blog. And since it's pretty much become a way of life for me - I think I'll continue it. Hopefully, I'll get better at posting in a TIMELY manner and not get a month behind this year. That will be my 2008 goal - get no more than 14 days behind on my posting. Why 14 days? Because I already know I'll be out of the country for 8 days in January and I'm sure it will take me a few days to get through all the pics and get them posted! :) Trying to be reasonable in my goal setting!

So . . . here goes. . . Pic-A-Day 2008
My plans for New Year's Day were to wake up and get straight in Pa's blue chair and watch the Razorback game with my Gma. HOWEVER, that was a really sad game. . . so I decided to take a pic of the Florida/Michigan game instead. THAT was more like a Bowl Game should be!! My Gma cooked up biscuits and sausage for breakfast and then for a lunch we had blackeyed peas, squash, yams, corn, ham, and cornbread. My Gma makes the best cornbread in the world! I've watched her make it over and over and I've tried to make it several times. . . but no one came make cornbread like my Gma Polly!

Yes, I had a WILD New Year's Eve. Jackson and I spent the night with my Gma Polly. (Gerald had to work a double shift so he went in to work at 3pm and didn't get home until 7am.) Jackson fell asleep on the couch about 7:30 and Gma and I stayed up until about 1:30 playing dominoes. Two wild and crazy girls, I know!! :) Best New Year's Eve I've had in a long time!
